What Is Relining in Denture Repair?

Denture Adjustments and Repairs Stuart, FL

In denture repair, the process of relining them can help them to fit your mouth better. The shape of your mouth can change over time, and that can prevent the dentures from fitting correctly. Even just using them normally can affect how well the denture fits. That is when a dentist will recommend relining as part of denture repair.

About relining

Dentures need to fit the shape of the mouth and gums, so they do not slip around. However, the denture can become loose over time. To prevent this, the dentist will need to reline the false teeth every couple of years. This procedure involves shaving the bottom of the denture. It will be replaced with plastic so it will fit the gums properly. There are three kinds of relining procedures: hard, temporary, and soft.

Soft relining

Sometimes, patients have painful gums, which makes it hard to keep wearing the denture. With a soft relining procedure, part of the lining will be replaced with a waxy material. This material can stay soft and can be better than plastic. It will not create sore parts on the gums.

Hard relining

With this procedure, the plastic lining in the denture is replaced with a putty. Once this is placed in the mouth, it will become harder. This helps it to mold to the gumline better. Once it is dry, it can be used with the denture to make a new denture. This new denture will conform to the shape of the patient’s mouth.

Temporary relining

Sometimes, the gums can become swollen because of using the dentures so much. This is when a temporary denture reline is used. This kind of denture repair is done before hard relining is done. An impression for new dentures can also be done at this time.

However, if the impression is done when the gums are swollen, the new denture will not fit well. This is why it is considered to be a temporary solution. With a temporary reline, the patient will wear it for a few weeks until the gums are back to normal. It can help reduce the amount of swelling.

Why have a denture relined?

The denture may no longer fit correctly if the patient has water retention, weight loss, or weight gain. The shape of the mouth might change, making another denture necessary. The denture might rub the gums in this case, causing an infection. Regular wear and tear can also make it necessary to get relining. If the denture is rebuilt or the ridge is reabsorbed, the fit may not be right. Luckily, a dentist can help with these issues and determine the right kind of denture repair.
